Social Studies Curriculum Adoption for 2022-2023 school year

In 2019 the state adopted new Social Studies Standards. Since that time, TPS Curriculum and Instruction Department have been leading a team of educators,  including teachers and administrators,  to prioritize the standards at each grade, review current adopted materials to check for alignment, and begin an adoption process once it was clear the old adoption would not suffice.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) was issued asking publishers to submit their 4th – 12th-grade programs for review in alignment with the new standards and the National College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework. After reviewing and scoring submissions, only a few products met our rigorous expectations. One of those was InquirED Journeys for 4th and 5th grade. Units were piloted in classrooms and scored. InquirED journeys received high marks for their alignment to the state standards and C3 framework, use of high-impact and engaging strategies and supports, informative assessments, and culturally responsive and equitable practices, approaches, and perspectives.

The Instructional Materials Committee chose to honor the recommendation of the District Curriculum Design Committee as outlined in Policy 2020 and 2020R to move forward for adoption and to also explore the adoption of this same program at K-3. The K-3 program was then piloted and scored and much like 4th and 5th it received high marks. At the July 14th School Board meeting, the Curriculum and Instruction Department, Instructional Materials Committee, and Superintendent will be presenting the recommendation to adopt InquirED Journeys for K-5.

If you would like to learn more about this inquiry-based program that launches with a compelling question, allows students to research topics with facilitated exploration, and ends with a “call to action” where students show what they have learned through authentic and meaningful projects, the links below will give you a window into this engaging curriculum.  After exploring the links, we welcome your input on this feedback form.

Supplemental resources will be added to ensure that our students have a deep understanding of tribal sovereignty which is a state mandate, that annual civic observances are adhered to, and that financial literacy is incorporated into learning at each grade.

We will continue our search for a high-quality secondary social studies curriculum into the 2022-2023 school year.
